Attend The Party Of The Year At Merida's Carnival

From Feb. 14-21, the Yucatecan city of Merida is home to one of the best parties of the year known as Carnival. Although Carnival takes place nationwide in Mexico and throughout Latin America, Merida's Carnival is one of the five most important in the entire Mexican republic and one of 12 principal carnivals in Latin America.

Pre-carnival events begin on Jan. 27 at the Carlos Iturralde Stadium in Merida, where 180 artists will dance to tropical rhythms while presentations begin to announce the kings and queens of carnival. There will also be 18 pre-carnival dances in different neighborhoods around the city and a night when the parade floats are presented, all of which are leading up to Wednesday, Feb. 14. It is on this day that bad humor and moods will be symbolically burned, the official initiation of carnival and kick off to the week's festivities.

Carnival's parades start on Friday, Feb. 16 and continue to Tuesday, Feb. 20 with over 110 groups competing for first prize in their division. Judging is based on choreography and costumes and over 20 local and international bands will play along the entire parade route. Ash Wednesday, Feb. 21, marks the end of Carnival and beginning of the somber period called Lent.

Merida's Municipal Tourism office has created the Turibus so that tourists can actually take place in part of the parade, hopping on and off as they wish. In addition, there is plenty to see and do in Merida, also known as the White City, located 850 miles east of Mexico City in the Yucatan Peninsula.

New Rule For Dialing Phone Numbers In Mexico

The rules for dialing phone numbers in Mexico from the United States and Canada have recently changed as a 1 must be dialed in front of all cellular phone numbers when calling from out of the country. The process for dialing phone numbers from the U.S. and Canada is fairly simple although phone numbers are 8 digits long for Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara unlike the 7 numbers in most other cities.

To dial from the U.S. or Canada to a landline in Mexico is: 011-52 (country code) - (area code) - phone number. There are different area codes in each state similar to our system in the United States. To dial from Mexico to the U.S. or Canada is: 001 - (area code) - number.

Dialing a landline within Mexico would be: 01 - (area code) - number. If in Mexico and calling from a landline to a Mexican cellular phone in the same city is: 044 - (area code) - phone number. To a cellular phone in another city is: 045 - (area code) - phone number. To a Nextel of the same city: phone number only, and to a Nextel in another city is: 01 - area code - phone number.
