Tampico (Tamaulipas)

A less frequented beach destination, Tampico is an interesting side of northern Mexico just longing to be discovered. It is especially convenient for snowbirds and RV aficionados: less than four hours from the Texas border, it is the first important beachside city on the gulf coast.

Right on the city fringe, in the Municipality of Madero, Playa Miramar is Tampico's most popular beach. A renowned fishing spot, it hosts several fishing tournaments throughout the year, including the Torneo de Pesca Playero and the Torneo de Pesca Convivencia Familiar. At the Carpintero Lagoon, the Competencia Internacional de Motonautica takes place, as well as other boat races, such as sailing competitions. There is also a fishing tournament there.
In Tamaulipas you can enjoy a wide variety of local cuisine. During your visit, be sure to try the jaibas a la Frank (a crab dish), fried huachinango (red snapper), the gorditas de doña Tota and the famed carne a la tampiqueña (a grilled beef dish). Here are three restaurants seving local specialties in Miramar beach: Restaurante Juana Cata (52)83 32 11 50 50, Restaurante El arrecife (52)83 32 11 72 85, and Restaurante La Guardia de Lorencillo, located on the boardwalk.
